Silk-embroidered sampler
Probably Mexican, late 18th century

Sampler on linen worked in polychrome silks and glass beads, with floral bands and spot motifs of a male figure holding a teacup and saucer; a rustic church and bell tower; animals including a goat, deer, dog, and sheep; birds; butterflies; and flowers including carnations and roses; and raspberries or grapes on a vine; all worked at both ends of the piece.

The name of the embroideress is written in ink in a banner held by two embroidered doves: "Lo hizo de Ma. los Dolores Gomez y Montero" (Maria de los Dolores Gomez y Montero made this)
