Tambour-embroidered border
Indian, for the export market, mid-18th century
Tambour-Embroidered Border, Indian Export, mid-19th century

Very fine silk embroidery on cotton, executed in chainstitch, with a cartouche of scrollwork, acanthus and floral motifs flanked by sprays of myrtle and florals, including stylized carnations, tulips, and buds; bordered on top and bottom with a pattern of alternating lobed cartouches and small diamonds, and scalloped at one edge and finished with embroidery. The ground fabric, a diamond-patterned twill-weave cotton, is particularly unusual for this type of embroidery. A fragment of a larger border, it was possibly used for furnishing as a bed valance.
