Silk Embroidered Picture by Ann Thomson
British, dated 1735

This charming and finely worked panel of needlework depicts a wonderful scene of a central tree with a variety of disproportionately large-scale birds perched on flowering branches including an owl, a parrot and a peacock. The lower register is embroidered with a field of stylized strawberries and a rampant lion wearing the British crown. The entire piece is worked in polychrome silk threads in petit point, counted satin, queen, and mosaic filling stitches. The embroiderer, Ann Thomson, proudly signed and dated her work along the upper edge of the whimsical composition.
