| This border, embroidered
in red silk on natural-colored linen, illustrates biblical vignettes
from the life of King David. When viewed from left to right the
story unfolds: Bathsheba is having her feet bathed by a handmaiden
as David leans out of a tower window; David, seated on his throne
with crown and scepter and two soldiers behind him, orders Uriah
(a Hittite soldier and Bathsheba's husband) to fight; finally,
trumpeters proclaim David's triumph in the slaying of Goliath
and the king is shown holding Goliath's head. The scenes are set
in a landscape with large-scale flowering trees, exotic birds,
tents, and a fountain; narrow upper & lower
borders are worked with a single row of stylized foliate sprigs.
The entire composition is worked in Ceylon stitch and may have
originally been part of a valance.
