Printed Linen Day Dress
French, ca. 1837

Roller–printed linen day dress with stylized botehs on dotted self–striped ground in purple, red, green, brown, and white. Wide, off–the–shoulder neckline and fitted bodice with two darts each side; gigot sleeves pleated into self–fabric piped band at upper arm; opening at wrist, fastened with three small white buttons and buttonhole thread loops; full skirt pleated into wide waistband with fine gathering across center back; hook-and-eye closure at center back with single button at neck; piping around neckline, armholes, sleeve seam, and CB opening; the bodice lined in off-white cotton and open–weave off–white cotton facing at hem; the scallop–edged botehs enclosing geometric flowers and other motifs; the dotted ground with small, scattered geometric leaves; the subtle white and off–white stripes created by fine and heavier warps.
