In addition to their utilitarian aspect, samplers also offered the potential for a visually appealing graphic statement. On this large-scale example, vivid polychrome silks are worked on a linen canvas ground in long-and-short, satin and tent stitches; French knots, couched metallic thread and purl add textural details to the eccentrically embroidered panel. In addition to the boldly shaded flamestitch patterns, other figural motifs delight the eye. Sprigs of strawberries, roses and carnations surround pin-wheel and diamond designs; flowering vases decorate the lower register of baroquely curling foliate forms; and a small peacock, with plumage rendered in a naturalistic fashion, perches proudly in the leafy exuberance.

Provenance: Ex Collection Emma-Henriette Schiff von Suvero (née Emma Reitzes,
July 24, 1873 - January 8, 1939); restituted to the family in 2003, formerly in the Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Austria.
