Border from a palampore (hanging), depicting lowering trees, peacocks, and deer-like animals in shades of red, pink, blue, green, olive, and sepia on an allover vermiculated ground with yellow-beige stylized vines. Coromandel Coast for the Western market.
Excellent condition. Color is vibrant. Evidence of original glazing remains. Smaller corner from the same palampore also available.
Provenance
Descended in the Manning family, Salem and Ipswich, Massachusetts until 2021. A dress of 1770s/80s Indian painted cotton from the same family was worn by Miriam Manning, maternal grandmother of writer Nathaniel Hawthorne's grandmother, Miriam Manning (the dress sold by Cora Ginsburg LLC and now in a private collection).
