Royal blue silk satin apron front, with double-sided embroidery in white silk depicting a design of flowers along the hem, at the corners, and surrounding the uncut pocket slits. Produced in Guangzhou, China and exported to Europe between the 1830s and 1850s.
Similar aprons with polychrome floral embroidery include those in the collections of Colonial Williamsburg (1971-1545); the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (59.427); and the V&A Museum (AP.52-1872). An apron worked in white silk on a blue satin ground that closely resembles the example here, also in the latter institution, was donated by Miss Layard to whom it was sent from China in 1848 (T.117-1917).
Very good condition overall; small stain at center
