Late Renaissance "Assisi work" embroidered picture in red silk with scenes from the story of David and Bathsheba, worked in buttonhole, detached buttonhole, long arm cross stitch, and running or back stitch on plain-weave linen. From left to right, Bathsheba having her feet bathed by a handmaiden as David leans out of a tower window; David seated on his throne with crown and scepter and two soldiers behind him, ordering Uriah, Hittite soldier and Bathsheba's husband, to fight; trumpeters proclaiming David's triumph in the slaying of Goliath and David with the head of Goliath; the scenes set in landscape with large-scale flowering trees, exotic birds (at left), two tents, and a fountain. With narrow upper and lower borders with single row of stylized foliate sprigs
Very good condition. Conservation mounted and in a modern gilt frame.
