Indian export
Mordant-painted, block-printed, and resist-dyed cotton fragment, possibly from a ceremonial cloth, with a design of fantastic birds and floral and foliate forms, including carnation-like flowers, in red and deep purple against a light indigo-dyed ground. Possibly produced for the Southeast Asian market.
A nearly identical half-palampore (cut in half vertically) in a private US collection uses the same block-printed motifs against a white ground; these are the only two published examples of this design.
Mounted and conserved (three areas of loss; conserved and backed with cotton dyed to match). Otherwise good condition. One selvedge present.
