Young girl's dress of striped pale pink-and-cream silk taffeta with voluminous gigot sleeves, tight-fitting bodice, and full skirt. It is a wonderful example of the return in the 1830s to dressing children in silhouettes designed for adults, and marks the change from the Rousseauian idea of comfort and movement in children's wear in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Provenance
The Manning family of Ipswich and Salem, MA; by descent to last owner. This dress is said to have been worn by Maria Manning at age 8, according to an accompanying note.1
