Two joined, gored panels of "Les Grenades" woven by Tassinari & Chatel and used in couture garments by Jean-Philippe Worth, designed ca. 1881–2 and probably woven ca. 1898, when Worth used this silk. Voided cut black velvet on a gray satin ground with large-scale pattern of Turkish-inspired pomegranates in ogives.
The MCNY holds a reception dress by Jean-Philippe Worth in an identical pattern in claret red velvet; the dress with a nearly identical pattern in ivory lampas (42.146.4A-B). Worth constructed his own fancy dress costume of the same velvet in 1898.
Excellent condition. Probably from a woman's dress or skirt.
