Silk-embroidered linen bedcover or colcha, possibly made in the area of Salamanca, Castile and León in the middle of the 18th century. The motifs resemble those on folk embroideries from the Sierra de Francia mountains. The ground fabric is a homespun ribbed linen, worked in brightly colored pink, blue, yellow and green silk flosses depicting figures including men with rifles and ladies in Salamancan costume. The center is embroidered with floral encomiendas or medallions, with carnations, striped animals, and double-headed eagles. The linen loom widths measuring 17.125 to 17.5 in. each.
A linen towel with extremely similar silk-embroidered motifs, including rosettes, carnations, birds, and a double-headed eagle, is in the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas (CE23574).
Wear to the embroidery and staining.
