American (New York)
Blue-on-white crewelwork coverlet, worked in tonal blue wool yarns across three and a half joined panels of homespun twilled linen, with a design of seven vertical bands of flowering blue vines, worked in two shades of indigo blue wool yarns using stem, fishbone, long and short, and herringbone stitch and French knots.
Very good condition overall. Discoloration at one corner. Some wear to the embroidery and minor marks on linen ground.
Provenance
The linen is said to have been spun and woven by Elizabeth Swezey Hallock from flax grown by her husband, Zerubbabel, ca. 1749, at Mattituck, Long Island. Elizabeth Swezey (1722–1806) married Zerubbabel Hallock (1722–1800); the coverlet is said to have descended in the family through their son Zachariah (1749–1820).
Acquired at Sotheby's, New York, January 1996.
